Tues- They flew out of KC into D.C. As soon as they got to D.C. they took the Metro to their hotel.(Embassy Suites.) Then they walked to the White House and stopped for ice cream. They ate at the hotel, then went to bed so they were well rested.
Wed.- They took the Metro to Arlington Cemetery and saw JFK's Grave with the Eternal Flame, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and The Changing of the Guard. Next up was the Air and Space Museum where they saw To Fly in the IMAX and Journey to the Stars in the Planetarium.
Lunch was enjoyed at one of the many food trucks by everyone but Winter. She opted for a peanut butter sandwich! After lunch they went to the Smithsonian Castle, then the Holocaust Museum. Winter and Darlene waited outside while the older two and Frank went through the Museum. Winter needed to rest and was just a little too young for this.
They made one more stop before dinner and that was to the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. They got to watch a $5 bill be made. Dinner was in Georgetown then it was back to the hotel for bed.
This was also the day that they lost Grandpa. He didn't make it in time to get on the metro with everyone else and it left without him! Thankfully they(and his bag!) were able to meet up with him at their next stop.
Thurs.- It was back on the Metro to Capital Hill. They went on a tour of the Library of Congress. Then they took the tunnel to the Capital Visitor Center for a tour of the Capital. They walked to Congress Fortenberry's Office. There they got tickets to tour the Senate and House of Representatives Galleries. They had lunch at the Visitor Center.
After that they went to a Supreme Court lecture and then on the Union Station. This is were Winter got the pink hat that you may see in some of the pictures. Then it was time for dinner at DuPont Circle and back to the hotel for bed.
Fri.- This whole day was spent at The Newseum and Old Post Office. For Dinner they went back to DuPont Circle.
Sat.- This day was spent walking to the memorials. They went to Albert Einstein, Lincoln Memorial, Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and the Washington Monument(couldn't get close due to it being under construction from the earthquake.). They also did the American History Museum and the National Gallery of Art.
Sun.- The plan for this day was to leave the hotel at 7 to catch their plane, so they could be in KC by 10:42. Well, when they got to the airport, they found out that their plane had been delayed. After trying to find a plane back to KC they had to settle on flying into Omaha. They finally arrived in Omaha at 3:30. Frank ended up hitching a ride on Tuesday with his son back to KC to pick up their car.
Here are the pictures that Winter took, Darlene took and some I stole from her cousin's facebook page. They are in no specific order.
